6. Get a great Website for you Online Business – You can’t will this battle without a great website on place. Every business owner wants to show up on the first page of Search Engine results. So ask yourself a very genuine question, “Is my website really one among the TOP 10 websites on the web on this topic?” Be honest with you. If your website is not, than make it better.
7. Include Sitemap Page in your website – Search Engine Boats or Spiders can’t index a page that can’t be crawled. A sitemap page on your website will help spiders to find all the important pages on your site, and help the spider understand your website’s hierarchy. This is more helpful if any website has a hard-to-crawl navigation menu. If your site is large, make several sitemap pages and use sitemap indexing. Important Tip; Always add sitemap.xml in your website.
8. Use Webmaster Tools – Add your website to Google Webmaster, Yahoo Site Explorer, Bing Webmaster Tool and your sitemaps to these webmaster tools. Further optimize your website based on the suggestions from these webmaster tools to get good ranking and positions on these search engines.
9. Do proper Keyword Research at the start of the project – Proper Keyword selection is the most important activity for the better SEO results for your business. Do intensive keyword research and select a best set of keywords for your website. Important Tip: If appropriate, modifying the search terms with an area can really cut down the competition. Many good free keyword research tools are available online; you can use free versions of Keyword Discovery or WordTracker, both of these also have more powerful paid versions. Ignore the numbers these tools show; what’s important is the relative volume of one keyword to the another keyword. Another good free tool is Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool.
10. Make SEO-friendly URLs - Use proper keywords in your page URLs and file names, such as om-eg.com/internet-marketing-services.html. A file with 3+ hyphens tends to look spammy and users hesitate to click on it. Use hyphens in URLs and file names, not underscores. Hyphens are treated as a “space” while underscores are not.
11. Write unique and relevant Meta Tags for the every page of the website – Title and Description Meta Tags are the most important on-page SEO factors. To Rank high in the SERP’s its essential to have your primary keywords in the Page Title. Meta Description tag is also very important and it should include the relevant keyword(s) and should be written in such a way that it encourage searchers to click on your listing. You can ignore the Keywords Meta Tag, as no major search engine today supports it.
12. Write Unique and quality Page Content – Write unique and engaging content for your product and services on your website which makes you different from your competitors. Use your writing skills and give as much quality information as you can in your content. Think from the searchers perspective and find an answer for a simple question “What people are looking for?” Write your own product descriptions, using the keyword you identify during your keyword research phase, to target actual words searchers use, and make product pages that blow the competition away. Also great content is a great way to get inbound links. Important Tip: Ensure that the visible content (Page Text, Headings, etc.) is consistent with invisible content (Title tags, Alt Tags, page Description, etc.)
13. Write for your Targeted Audience – Always write for your targeted audience; write what they are looking for. Google, Yahoo, Bing etc., have very powerful bots crawling the web, but these boats do not perform any sign-up, subscriptions, conversions and phone call for your product and services. These are the actual human beings who perform these actions on your website, so write your page copy with humans in mind. Yes, you need keywords in the page text, but don’t use keywords excessively. Keep your text readable.
14. Internal Linking: Use keywords as Anchor Text for internal linking - Anchor text helps tells search engine spiders what the linked page is about. Links that simply say “click here” add nothing to your search engine visibility.
15. Link Building: Build quality Links - Start with some foundational links like trusted directories. Seek links from authority sites in your domain and industry. If local search matters to you, look for links from trusted sites in your geographic area, local business directories, etc. DO some analysis for inbound links to your competitor’s websites to find links you can obtain, too. Create great content on a regular basis and use Social Media tools and platforms to build awareness and links for your product and services.
16. Use Press Releases to get good Exposure – Building a relationship with media covering your industry or your local region can be a great source of publicity, and getting inbound links from trusted media websites. But be genuine with this practice; only issue a press release when you have something newsworthy to report.
17. Create your Blog and participate with other related Blogs – Every Search Engine, and especially Google, love blogs for the fresh content and highly-structured data. Other than that; this is the best way to join the conversations that are already taking place about your industry, product, services and company. Reading and commenting on other blogs can also increase your publicity and can help getting some quality inbound links. Important Tip: Always keep your blog at yourdomain.com/blog for eg. om-eg.com/blog so that; your main domain gets the benefit of any links to your blog posts. If that’s not possible, use sub-domains like; blog.yourdomain.com.
18. Use PPC Advertising – Choose Google’s AdWords, Microsoft adCenter, Yahoo or something else, as per your requirements and budget. PPC is always a great way to get actual search volume for your targeted keywords. Yes, it’s not a free service and it costs money, however; if you have the budget it’s always worth to invest. It’s the best and most effective solution if you are looking for instant visibility and results.
19. Go live with Social Media Marketing (SMM/SMO) – Social Media Marketing is a very powerful tool today to get proper visibility for your services and products in your industry and domain. Having ethical and quality accounts on major Social Networking platforms like; Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, MySpace, Flicker, Google Plus is always a great practice.
Additional Important Tip: When optimising your site, it’s always good to aim for ‘what you see is what you get’.
